Up for Air
(Patrick Dunfey)

When I was young I thought that the intellect mattered
I stayed in my room and I studied the world
While most kids were running around
Building up something that I had not yet found
What could it matter, I said
They look real nice, but they’re wasting their time
Time is much harsher to the body than the mind

I didn’t know then that my life could end short of my dreams
My lofty ambitions played fiddle to fear
At fifteen the notes all went sour
Five dark years forced me to come up for air
Hey, the air stinks in this bar tonight, will you come and walk with me?
Will you come and walk with me, Darling?

And all of the people I thought cool in high school
Are working at jobs that they can’t stand but do
While those from the back of the class
Are moving up forward, and moving up fast

Fast art and fast songs
We are fasting for fashion
Dishing up dashing reviews of our days
